Cleanroom Sciences, (CRS), was founded by Gary Rolf, who worked in the cleanroom and controlled environment industry for more than 30 years. Through Mr. Rolf's efforts, CRS has been instrumental in defining much of what the testing and certification of cleanrooms is today. While he was the president of CRS, he authored and co-authored many of the standards and procedures that govern our industry. Some of these are the Institute of Environmental Sciences Technology (IEST) Recommended Practices numbers 2, 6, 12, and 19, the National Environmental Balancing Bureau (NEBB) Procedural Standards for Certified Testing of Cleanrooms, 1988 and 1996 editions, and several others. He is the originator and developer of Polystyrene-Latex (PSL) Sphere Leak Test method for testing and qualifying HEPA and ULPA filters. This method is used by over 95% of the testing laboratories as well as the manufacturers of HEPA and ULPA filters serving the electronics cleanroom industry worldwide. Mr. Rolf was also a collaborator and promoted the use of “Tube Array”1 instrumentation for the  testing of airflow velocity at the filter face and within the cleanroom.

With field offices in Portland, OR and Albuquerque, NM, CRS maintains its main office and training facilities in Phoenix, AZ where in-house and visiting personnel from our customers, associates, and even our competitors are trained on aspects of cleanroom testing, performance, safety and cleanroom operation protocol. CRS additionally has provided training services to/for organizations such as IEST, NEBB, ASHREA, FDA, Southwest Safety Alliance, Arizona Center of Excellence at Arizona  State University / Del E. Webb School of Construction. In addition to the administration and training office, CRS maintains an attached 11,000 square feet warehouse and shop facility. The shop serves as support for the field operations and for laboratories and in-house testing and certification of project materials such as bench testing of HEPA filters, and Cleanliness Class Compatibility Studies (CCCS) of equipment or materials that will be used in cleanrooms.
